Biographie

Mark Knopfler est un auteur, compositeur, guitariste et chanteur britannique, né le 12 août 1949 à Glasgow.

Fondateur en 1977, avec son frère David, du groupe Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, guitariste poursuit aujourd'hui une carrière solo. Ses mélodies sont particulièrement fines et adaptées à son style de guitare très aérien, un style blues-country-rock mêlant le phrasé de Bob Dylan à l’élégante décontraction de J.J. Cale.

Mark Knopfler a également prêté sa voix ou sa guitare à de nombreux artistes, notamment : Eric Clapton, Hank Marvin, Brendan Croker, Chet Atkins, Bob Dylan (sur les albums Slow train et Infidels), J.J. Cale (#8), Randy Newman, Rory Block, Phil Lynott, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Nail, Van Morrison (qui effectue une apparition remarquable à l'occasion l'album Sailing to Philadelphia sur la chanson The Last Laugh), The Chieftains (The Lily of the West sur l'album The Long black veil, réunissant autour du groupe d'illustres interprètes tels que Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Ry Cooder, The Rolling Stones...), etc. Celui-ci a écrit aussi la chanson Private Dancer qu'il donna à Tina Turner lui permettant ainsi de faire rebondir sa carrière après sa rupture d'avec Ike Turner.
